Sedation Dentistry in Midtown Manhattan

Visiting the dentist can be stressful, especially if you have dental anxiety or a phobia, or if you need a long procedure. At Brightly Dental Midtown, 425 Madison Ave near Grand Central, we offer two kinds of sedation, nitrous oxide and IV sedation, so you can be comfortable and relaxed during treatment.

Your sedation options

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)

Nitrous oxide is a sedative you breathe in through a small nosepiece. Within minutes, most patients feel more at ease. The level can be adjusted throughout your procedure, and the effects wear off quickly once the gas is stopped, which means you can drive yourself home after your appointment.

IV sedation

Intravenous (IV) sedation offers a deeper level of relaxation for patients who are anxious or who are having a lengthy procedure. The medication goes directly into your bloodstream, so the effects are felt almost immediately. Because of the nature of IV sedation, you must bring a friend or family member who can drive you home.

Local anesthesia

Sedation does not replace numbing. For most procedures we use local anesthesia to numb the area being treated, and sedation is added for patients who want to be more relaxed.

Who sedation can help

Your dentist will review your medical history and medications with you and recommend the option that fits your treatment.

What to expect on the day

  1. Before your visit. Tell us about your medical history and any medications. If you choose IV sedation, arrange for someone to drive you home.
  2. During treatment. We start the sedation you chose and numb the area with local anesthesia before treatment begins.
  3. After treatment. With nitrous oxide, you can usually return to your day and drive yourself. With IV sedation, plan to rest and have your companion take you home.

Plan bigger treatment around your week

Larger procedures and surgeries can be scheduled on weekends by request, so you have time to rest before you are back at your desk. Our office is a short walk from Grand Central, Metro-North and the LIRR at Grand Central Madison (dentist near Grand Central).

Insurance and payment

We accept major PPO plans, including Aetna, Cigna, Guardian, MetLife, Delta Dental, Principal and Empire, and we can file out-of-network claims for you. We check your benefits before treatment so you know what your plan may cover (insurance). Patients without insurance can ask about our Kleer membership plan, and financing is available with CareCredit and Cherry, subject to credit approval.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive myself home after sedation?

After nitrous oxide, yes: the effects wear off quickly, so you can drive yourself home. After IV sedation, no: you must bring a friend or family member who can drive you home.

Which sedation is right for me?

Nitrous oxide suits mild to moderate nerves and shorter visits. IV sedation offers a deeper level of relaxation for anxious patients and lengthy procedures. Your dentist will recommend an option after reviewing your treatment and medical history.

Do you use sedation for implant surgery?

Yes. Implant and All-on-4 surgery is done under local anesthesia, and we offer nitrous oxide and IV sedation for patients who want to be more relaxed.

Will I still get a numbing shot?

Usually, yes. Sedation helps you relax, and local anesthesia numbs the area being treated.

Can sedation appointments be on a weekend?

Larger procedures and surgeries can be scheduled on weekends by request. Ask when you book.
